Taipei, April 2 (CNA) Four food trucks offering the delicacies of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras for free kicked off a nationwide tour in Taipei Saturday to promote the food culture of those Central American countries, the organizer Central America Trade Office (CATO) said on Saturday.
The four food trucks will travel together to different parts of Taiwan each weekend starting April 2 until May 29, offering various traditional foods from Taiwan’s three Central American allies to the public free of charge, including fry jack, shuco, and baleada, the trade office said.
The fry jack is a type of Belizean fried bread that is often served at breakfast, while the shuco is a Guatemalan-style hot dog featuring sauces and meat. The baleada is a Honduran street food made from flour tortilla with fillings such as fried red beans and cheese.
For nine weekends until May 29, the food trucks will travel to 15 cities and counties and each offer two types of dishes and one kind of beverage each day, the office said.
The trucks started off in Taipei Saturday, will go to New Taipei on Sunday, and then Keelung on Monday, which is the Children’s Day holiday.
At a ceremony in Taipei on Saturday, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yui (俞大㵢), joined by the top envoys of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras to Taiwan, announced the launch of the food truck tour.
Holding food events is the most effective way of strengthening exchanges between countries, Yui said.
He added that the tour would expose more people across Taiwan to the rich food culture of Taiwan’s Central American allies.
Guatemalan Ambassador to Taiwan Willy Gómez said apart from the shuco, people might also have a chance to try ceviche — a seafood dish popular in Guatemala made from shrimps cured in lime juice with other seasonings, as well as his country’s coffee served by the food trucks.
The shuco and ceviche are classic Guatemalan dishes, the ambassador said, adding that they are good food for people to share with their friends.
