"I build badass dreams through various forms of storytelling."
Kevin Wang, Head of Editorial Content of GQ Taiwan, shares why he is proud of his Taiwanese culture, the celebs he’d love to work with and how he describes his job.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?
I graduated from School of Visual Arts in NYC as a graphic design major. I was doing UI/UX in 2011 at the Editorial Development Group under Condé Nast when the office was still located at 4 Times Square. I left the company after three years, moved back to Taiwan and got into GQ Taiwan as an assistant fashion editor, and became HoEC last year.
To answer your question precisely – passion led me to Condé Nast.
How do you describe your job to friends and family?
I build badass dreams through various forms of storytelling.
This month is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the U.S. What does your heritage mean to you?
Being Taiwanese American can mean two different things depending on whether you’re living in the states or in Taiwan. I’ve lived in both countries equally long, and although one can say that the sense of belonging can be lost in between (meaning you’re not quite American and not quite Taiwanese), I’m still very proud of my Taiwanese culture where family and respect towards others is of utmost importance, regardless of where I reside. I’m grateful that my mother, a first-generation immigrant, brought my sisters and I to the states and struggled to fit into a new culture just for us to get a better, more creative education. I would not be where I am today without her.
What is something you know now that you wish you knew when you were younger?
Time is the ultimate luxury, so make the most of it. Oh, and invest in Bitcoin, obviously!
You have an unlimited supply of one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Time. Or perhaps bubble tea?
What is the best piece of advice you can give someone who strives to be where you are today?
Be curious. Focus on tomorrow. Stay inspired. Not trying to be a straight-A student by answering with our Condé Code, but I honestly think those three values will do most of the trick!
Best thing about living in Taiwan?
I think convenience has to be one of the best things about living in Taiwan. There’s a convenience store around every corner, as well as amazing food almost everywhere you go. You can also go from camping in the mountains to surfing in the ocean within an hour drive.
What's the most embarrassing fashion trend you used to rock?
Emo punk style. Yeah…Nope!
Which talent or artist would you like to work with?
My 3-year-old son is currently going through his superhero phase, and Iron Man and Spider-Man have been his two favorites, so I’d like to work with Robert Downey Jr. or Tom Holland, then I can come home and tell him I met his favorite superheroes in real life!
Savory or Sweet? What is your go-to snack or dessert?
Sweet. Cream puffs or custard egg tarts win my heart every time. I’m never not in the mood for one, or one box full.
