Museums have no borders,
they have a network
January 25, 2022
As incomparable places of discovery, they teach us about our past and open our minds to new ideas — two essential steps in building a better future. On International Museum Day 2022, which will take place on May 18th, we want to explore the potential of museums to bring about positive change in their communities through three lenses:
In this edition of International Museum Day, we invite you to join thousands of museums around the world in unleashing the power of museums! To find more information, visit the official website of the event:
International Museum Day
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society, and it has been steadily gaining momentum ever since. In 2021, the celebration amplified its impact by the development of hybrid activities all around the world, reaching 89 million Internet users through social media, news articles, blog posts, podcasts and more!
The Power of Museums: ICOM Prague 2022
The Power of Museums will also be the topic of the next ICOM General Conference: ICOM Prague 2022. Now at its 26th edition, the triennial General Conference is one of the most significant global events dedicated to museums and its professionals. Since 1948, an ever-growing number of participants from all continents have been gathering to discuss and share ideas related to the topical issues facing museums. For the first time in ICOM’s history, ICOM Prague 2022 will explore a new hybrid conference format, providing participants from all over the world full remote access to the scientific programme of ICOM Prague 2022.

📍Join our session on Heritage Protection Responses in 🇺🇦Ukraine on site and online

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, ICOM firstly condemned any destruction or threat to cultural heritage, called for relevant actors to support museums and museum personnel, and declared its expectation that all countries in the region abide by their obligations under the international cultural conventions.

🤝At operational level, ICOM has worked closely with its members both inside and outside Ukraine to ascertain the needs of #museums and #museumprofessionals in Ukraine and to understand what support other museums and museum professionals elsewhere in the ICOM network can offer their Ukrainian colleagues.

🔎This panel will spotlight the actions that have been carried out, as well as offer an opportunity to exchange on future needs for the museum community in Ukraine.

“Reimagining and Mobilising Museums for Climate Action” by Henry McGhie, Rodney Harrison, Colin Sterling

🌎 How can we connect global challenges, policy agendas, and people’s right to participate in shaping a better future? How can we address the inadequacy of current institutional forms and practices, and where should ideas come from? (…)

🌈 Reimagining Museums for Climate Action asked people – artists, curators, architects, designers, members of the public and others – to share their ideas on how #museums could be reimagined, to create either ‘twists’ on current forms of museums, or to create entirely new ‘shapes’ of museums. The aim was to provide creative opportunities for people to imagine the kinds of institutions that would help them to take #climateaction.
