Rockaway’s representative in the U.S Congress, Greg Meeks, joined a congressional delegation to Taiwan last week in a historic trip which raised international tensions between the U.S and  China.

Meeks, the 12-term representative for the New York 5th Congressional District, is also the Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and joined House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as she became the highest ranking American official to visit Taiwan in 25 years.
The visit angered Chinese officials and threw both their government, and the White House, off guard.
For decades, the U.S has held an unofficial diplomatic relationship with the democratic island, which China does not recognize and has routinely threatened to “Unify” with the rest of the country, by force if necessary.

The U.S has avoided direct support for Taiwan in order to avoid angering the Chinese government, and before the trip, Speaker Pelosi was warned the trip could do just that.
Since the meeting last Tuesday, where the delegation met with the Taiwanese government, China has increased military operations and drills in the area.
“Our Congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy,” the Congressional delegation said in an official statement.  “Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts long standing United States policy,” the statement said.
On Sunday, Aug. 7, Congressman Meeks joined CBS’ Face the Nation and discussed the recent trip.
“We doubled our economic, cultural and security cooperation with Taiwan in face of Beijing’s aggression,” Meeks told CBS’ Margaret Brennan. “So this was a very appropriate trip at the time for the region. And I think that when we talked to the Taiwanese, they were appreciative of us being there,” he said.
